Commitments of Traders

See the positions held by non-commercial speculators.

The Commitments of Traders (CoT) is based on a weekly report issued by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. It aggregates the holdings of large speculators, mainly hedge funds and banks in the U.S. futures markets, where commodities, metals, and currencies are bought and sold.

Published every Friday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, the CoT provides a breakdown of aggregate positions held by three different types of traders: commercial traders (in forex, typically hedgers), non-commercial traders (typically, large speculators), and non-reportable traders (typically, small speculators).

Since speculators are not able to deliver on contracts and have no need for the underlying commodity or instrument, they must buy or sell with the intention of closing their “sell” or “buy” position before the contract becomes due.
